Summer Internship Series: Do317

This past summer, I drove up to Indianapolis twice a week and interned in this beautiful mess of a building:

The Murphy Building, right in the heart of Fountain Square (a section of Indianapolis, for those of you not well-versed in midwest areas), is home to eccentric little businesses, including the Do317 Office and Lounge where I interned. With a staff of less than twenty individuals, Do317 impressively answers everyone’s constant question of “what should I do tonight?” through its app, site and social media platforms.

On my first day, I ended up getting tragically lost on the way to the lounge (and then later, the restroom) and was worried that this was a symbolic beginning to the rest of my time at Do317. Fortunately, it wasn't.

When I saw these sequined letters, I knew the lounge was around the corner.

When I saw these sequined letters,

I knew the lounge was around the corner.

As one of the 10 summer interns, I spent my time researching and adding events to the site, creating and refreshing different content pieces and promoting Do317 at various events. Though the majority of the work was done individually, we were always interacting with other people, whether they were other interns or actual staff.

Our How to Do Summer in Indy Guide, led by two other amazing interns, was our collaborative project. I worked on Indy Oddities, Outdoor Dining, Picnic Spots, the Olympics and (my favorite) Food Truck Dating Profiles. It was really exciting to have the finished project featured in the Do317 emails, especially since I used to be one of those 18,000+ subscribers on the receiving end of those.

Other than content pieces, we were always working on individual projects. Danielle Look, who is the general manager for Do317, guided us without a leash and let us pick the tasks we wanted experience in. Some interns worked on email marketing, client reports, graphic design, etc. I was able to learn more about CSS in order to code a page correctly, briefly work on the All-Star list of local influencers, and I even fit six sandbags, a large folding table and four totes boxes into the back of a tiny Mustang.

Now, the biggest perk (besides Funkyard Coffee being a block away) was the events we were able to promote at. Though we (interns) mostly covered shows (The Wombats, BORNS, Fifth Harmony, Haim, Snoop Dogg… basically every summer concert), there were also other Indy events to help at, including the massive Food Truck Festival. I was even able to help with stage production before a Houndmouth concert (which was awful, but I got a good tan). We also hosted our own events, like First Fridays in our lounge and #FSMarioKart (we should bring this to Hofstra).

Overall, working with Do317 was an awesome time -- I was blessed enough to have a great first internship and work with some of the coolest folks around.

A few of the interns (+ Princess Peach) at our Human Mario Kart on August 12, 2016.
