How to Land an Internship and Succeed While There

Our chapter of Zeta Phi Eta held a panel with professionals who gave us some tips to make the most of our internships. Check out some of the advice below:

When applying to internships and jobs:

  • Cater your resume to the job description.

  • Always write something about yourself and why you are interested or would be ideal for the position when applying to jobs. Do not just send your resume with no explanation!

  • Be visually creative with your resume in order to stand out.

  • Don’t take rejection personally. Thank the hiring manager and feel free to stay in touch with him or her for future opportunities.

  • Start off in smaller markets and the work your way up.

  • Take interviews as learning opportunities.

Once you have the internship:

  • Have a personality and don’t be afraid to show it. No one wants to a hire a wallflower.

  • Schmooze, but know where the boundaries lay.

  • Always agree to help, even if you are unsure of how to complete the task.

  • When something goes wrong, do not be afraid to step up and show that you can handle the situation!

  • Don’t be scared to take initiative, but do not become a bossy intern. You are there to learn and support the company!

  • Make sure you manage your time in and outside of the workplace so you can be an effective worker while in the office.
